Philippine Navy set to launch first locally made vessel

THE military will soon launch the first and biggest Filipino-built vessel to be included in its Navy’s fleet.

The vessel will be launched in three months.

The vessel, which is being developed under the modernization program of the Armed Forces, is already undergoing finishing touches in a secured shipyard in the south.

“It is a cargo-logistics vessel with beachhead landing capabilities. It can carry heavy loads of both logistics and personnel at the same time. It is highly ideal to our archipelagic country,” a military official said.

The ship will undergo sea trials before it will be officially deployed in November.

A source at the Armed Forces General Headquarters in Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City, said the logistics vessel was designed and is being manufactured 100 percent by Filipino shipbuilders.

The official, however, refused to give more information about the vessel, except that when deployed, it will be the Navy’s biggest landing craft utility.

“This will be the first time that the country will have a Filipino-made Navy vessel,” he said.

The ship will have its own armaments, monitoring, surveillance, navigation and communication equipment.
