Berlin, Nov 16, IRNA -- The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) said it had been aware since 2004 of a controversial US surveillance operation allegedly directed at protecting the country's embassy in Copenhagen, Danish press reports said Tuesday.
According to a PET press statement, the American monitoring had taken place from premises outside the diplomatic mission compound, but overlooking the embassy.
The Danish intelligence agency said a meeting was held last week with American embassy officals to dwell on the program.
PET has vowed to act, if illegal US activities are exposed.
The Danish daily Politiken disclosed earlier how a special surveillance detection squad operated from a cover address across the street from the American Embassy.
A former head of the unit had also confirmed that registrations did took place from 2000 to 2003.
Politiken had previously reported how all American embassies, according to a US government memorandum, have a SIMAS registration program sharing information with the CIA and FBI on suspicious persons.
The information is kept for at least 20 years, and in some instances forever.
Danish privacy right experts have seriously questioned the legality of such a disputed information gathering system in Denmark.
Similar American spying operations have been conducted in other Nordic countries.
